Personal journey into safety

What first drew you into prioritising safety? Have you ever witnessed (or been affected by) a head injury or near-miss at work?
I’ve witnessed the impact of materials dropped from a hight and the damage sustained to a hard hat. It really focusses one’s thoughts on what the results could have been had a hard hat had not been worn.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about head safety?
That head injuries don’t always come from dramatic events. A simple knock or falling tool can cause life-changing consequences. Prevention is often straightforward, but only if taken seriously.

Why safety matters

What risks do you think are most commonly underestimated when it comes to head injuries?
Low-level hazards—like door frames, beams, or working in loft spaces—are often overlooked. People tend to associate hard hats with large construction sites, but the reality is that many injuries happen in everyday tasks.

How do you encourage people to take PPE seriously, even when it feels inconvenient?
We focus on relatable examples and real consequences. When people understand why PPE matters—rather than just being told to wear it—they’re far more likely to engage. Leadership also plays a key role: if supervisors set the standard, others follow.

Getting involved

Why did you choose to support Hard Hat Awareness Week?
It aligns with our mission—raising awareness, improving behaviours, and preventing avoidable injuries. Campaigns like this help bring important conversations to the forefront.

What does being part of this campaign mean to you or your organisation?
It’s an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to safety across all sectors we work in, from construction to supported housing. It also allows us to share knowledge and support wider industry improvement.

Looking forward

What changes would you like to see in how safety is approached on site in the future?
A shift from reactive to proactive safety. More engagement, better training, and stronger integration of safety into everyday decision-making—not just when inspections are due.

How can businesses better support workers to feel confident speaking up about safety?
By creating a culture where concerns are welcomed, not dismissed. That means visible leadership support, no blame for raising issues, and clear action when concerns are reported. We also feel strongly about a better structure and payments around SSIP which is paid weekly but accounts for less than a normal days pay.

What role do campaigns like Hard Hat Awareness Week play in driving real change in your industry?
They act as a catalyst. They raise awareness, encourage reflection, and give organisations a reason to revisit their standards and behaviours.

Your message to others

What advice would you give to someone who s new to working with PPE?
Treat PPE as your last line of defence—but an essential one. Understand how to use it properly, check it regularly, and never assume a task is “too small” to need it.

If you could leave people with one message about head safety, what would it be?
If there’s a risk—no matter how small—protect your head. It only takes one moment for an incident to change everything.

Why should other businesses and individuals get involved in Hard Hat Awareness
Week?
Because awareness leads to action. By getting involved, you’re not just promoting safety— you’re helping prevent injuries and protecting lives
